Beauty Tip Tuesday! Prolong Your Color Before Your Event

Posted by on September 29, 2015

You absolutely adore your freshly colored locks when you step out of the salon, but as the weeks pass, your hair color inevitably fades—right? Actually, that doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, by following just a few simple hair color maintenance tips, you can keep your color looking bold and vibrant until your six-week touch-up appointment rolls around!

Use Color-Care Products

Start by making sure you’re using the right products. Specifically, invest in quality shampoos and conditioners that are specifically designed for color-treated hair. Some of these will even deposit color with each wash to keep your shade looking vibrant. We recommend Redken’s line of color extended shampoos and conditioners, though if you’re on a tighter budget, Herbal Essences also has a line of “Color Me Happy” shampoos and conditioners that do a great job at a lower price.

Wash Hair Less Often

Speaking of shampoos and conditioners, how often do you wash your hair? If you’re like many women, you wash daily, but did you know that daily washing can strip the natural oils from your hair, drying it out and causing your color to fade more quickly? Instead, make an effort to wash your hair every other day or even once every few days, depending on how naturally oily your hair is. You might even consider switching to a cleansing conditioner as opposed to a traditional, lathering shampoo to cleanse more gently and preserve your salon hair color.

Protect Hair From the Sun

It’s no secret that the sun’s rays can be damaging to your skin, but did you know they can harm your hair as well? Too much sun exposure can dry out your hair and cause color to fade or lighten as well. If you can help it, avoid exposing your hair to prolonged time in direct sunlight. You might consider protecting it with a scarf or stylish sun hat, even. You can further protect your hair from damaging UV rays by applying a protective product, such as Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Veil.

Be Careful When Using Styling Tools

Last but not least, make sure you’re protecting your hair from direct heat from your blow dryer, straightener, curling iron, and other styling tools. If you’re not doing so already, start using a protective spray before you dry or style your hair so as to protect

your color and avoid fried locks. We recommend Beat the Heat, a protective spray by Beauty Entourage. Furthermore, try to use your styling tools on the lower heat settings—and if your hair dryer has a “cool” setting, be sure to utilize that as well!

Nothing is more frustrating than spending money on salon color, only to watch it fade over the course of just a couple weeks. By implementing these color-care strategies into your daily life, you can keep your hair looking amazing for many weeks to come.
